It's looking a library-rock kinda of a show today. Get your uber-cool on, slip into your favorite sandals and grab a cup of organic herbal tea. It's going to be a wild ride! All kidding aside, I am very pleased to present two amazing Canadian west-coast bands on HTF today. AIDAN KNIGHT: Victoria, BC songwriter Aidan Knight has a new EP, Telecommunicate. It is based on the true story of Robin Van Helsum. Nicknamed “Forest Boy” by international media, Van Helsum was a troubled runaway who convinced the world that he lived alone in the woods for 5 years. It turned out to be a hoax. Aidan Knight is coming to the Blacksheep Inn on Thursday, May 23. (That is not a hoax!) MORLOVE: Vancouver Island-based songwriters Emily Millard (Miss Emily Brown) and Corwin Fox are Morlove. The ambitious song-writing process behind their new concept album was inspired and guided by natural and man-made patterns so the making-of is as interesting as the finished result. Hear all about it first-hand and then catch them at The Gallery Recording Studios later tonight. It's a long weekend - let me help you get it off to a great start! Tune in at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or on-line at CHUO.fm from 5 to 6 pm.
Seven-year itch? That’s how long we’ve waited for Stephen Fearing’s new disc, Between Hurricanes. During that time, Stephen’s life has taken dramatic twists and turns but his wonderful songwriting has only improved. Stephen is in the Ottawa area this weekend and he took some time to speak with us about the past, the present and the future. Catch Stephen at the Branch Restaurant in Kemptville on Saturday, and then on Sunday in Ottawa at the Gladstone Theatre. We are well aware that Canada is a vast country. This week many artists from the North have congregated in Ottawa. Joining me today, are two young blues/roots artists from the Yukon, Declan O’Donovan and Ryan McNally. You can catch them performing as part of the Northern Scene Festival on May 4th at The Rainbow Bistro. Also, the Tulip Festival is back, complete with live concerts for the next 2 weeks! I’ll spin some tunes to get you in the mood. You can check the event details here: http://tulipfestival.ca/All the fun starts at 5 pm on your fm dial at 89.1 in Ottawa or on-line at CHUO.fm. ....... anne-marie Host/Producer, Hop The FenceFridays @ 5 CHUO 89.1 Ottawa www.hopthefence.caTwitter: www.twitter.com/HopTheFenceCHUOFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hop-The-Fence/117638698322087
We are going to have a blast in the studio today! I have 2 bands coming in to chat with us in person! We have the makings of a party. Maybe I’ll bring some pinwheel sandwiches! First up: Ottawa’s FEVERS are bringing their electro-synth flavors to The Blacksheep Inn tomorrow night as they prepare to release a new disc in the next few weeks. It follows-up their debut EP, Passion Is Dead, which earned them plenty of fan love in the past year. Next up: Erik Lind and the Orchard. Following the release of their debut EP, Great White North, in September at Zaphod’s and a February visit to the Black Sheep Inn, tonight’s show at Raw Sugar marks their third visit to the National Capital region. Based in Montreal, born in Victoria, raised in Ottawa, Erik and the band will warm your hearts with their special brand of indie-pop. Tune in at 5 pm today in Ottawa at 89.1 FM or on-line at CHUO.fm....... anne-marie Host/Producer, Hop The FenceFridays @ 5 CHUO 89.1 Ottawa Twitter: www.twitter.com/HopTheFenceCHUOFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hop-The-Fence/117638698322087
Have you heard Stephen Fearing's new disc, Between Hurricanes? I first heard Stephen Fearing in 2006 after the release of Yellowjacket. Apart from his ability to create images with words and music, the timbre of his voice was captivating. It took him 7 years to follow up with a new album entitled, Between Hurricanes. That’s not to say he hasn’t been productive during that time span. The Juno-winning singer-songwriter is also a member of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings as well as Fearing & White. ... read full review on... earshot-online
Are you ready for your close-up? This is your chance to be in a music video. What could be sweeter than appearing in a video by Ottawa's own Shannon Rose and The Thorns? The band is performing at Irene's Pub next weekend (I'm giving you a heads-up here so you have time to make yourself presentable for the big screen). They will be shooting video at the event and they want you there looking like you're having a blast. Which, of course, you will be. As you may know, the band recently released a double CD called, Seasons, comprised of 4 EPs each composed and recorded in their respective seasons. Can't get much more Canadian than that! Hey I mean, we even sometimes get winter in the spring! Ughh :/ I am happy to welcome Shannon back to the studio tonight where she will be playing live on air for us. And her hubby, Steve, will be lurking about with video camera in hand. Yippee - Look ma, I be in a video! Tune in for the fun and possible mayhem at 5 p.m. on 89.1 fm in Ottawa or on-line at www.CHUO.fm ....... anne-marie Host/Producer, Hop The FenceFridays @ 5 CHUO 89.1 Ottawa www.hopthefence.caTwitter: www.twitter.com/HopTheFenceCHUOFacebook: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Hop-The-Fence/117638698322087

Did you know that the advent of the transistor radio back in the '50s is responsible for the popularization of Rock and Roll itself? Suddenly, portable radios were available to teenagers in North America, Europe and other parts of the world, who by then had enough disposable income to afford the devices. Things have evolved dramatically since then and today we have so many options for listening to the wide array of musical genres that beg for our attention. This is where college/community radio plays an important niche role. These grass-roots, volunteer-based stations, expose listening audiences to the DIY scene and targeted content. Clearly, you already appreciate the value of CHUO if you are reading this. But CHUO cannot provide quality content without some form of financial funding. So yep - this is the time of year when I come knocking on your virtual door or ear drums and ask you to drop a few coins in our hats. Hop The Fence will be celebrating 10 years on air in a few months. 10 years! That's 520 Fridays of programming! Just for you - For your listening pleasure! Please help keep independent music and radio alive and well by making a pledge! Speaking of transistor radios, this week's special guest has a deep appreciation for what the magical device has bestowed upon our modern world. With his latest disc entitled 6 Volts (the size of battery required to power portable radios of days gone by), Fred Eaglesmith blends country, blues, folk and rock and roll. Tune in at 5 pm to hear all about this exceptional Canadian storytelling troubadour. He will be appearing at the Blacksheep Inn on Saturday. Details on how to donate to CHUO:As a token of our appreciation, for any $25 donation or more we will give you a "Friends of CHUO" card that offers discounts at many of your favorite local businesses here in Ottawa.
