Last November, the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition (OMIC) announced three local artists selected to take part in three Live Production Residencies throughout 2017.

Soulful indie electro-pop five-piece Pony Girl, were the first band to enjoy the residency this month at the Shenkman Centre for the Arts.  Funk, soul and hip hop fusion artist Yao, and blues musician Catriona Sturton will take part in the program in April and July, respectively.

On today's show, we'll be chatting with Pony Girl about their experience and to find out what's next for the band after the success of their sophomore album, Foreign Life.

We've got a few special spins planned for you so be sure to tune in at 5 pm tonight and every Friday on 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Best of 2016

I am forever impressed with the myriad talented artists emerging from the Great White North!  I have made a few selections of my favorite releases of 2016 either national or local from here in Ottawa.  There are far too many to choose from that would fit into a one-hour program so basically the artists that I feature on Hop The Fence all year round are "best of" according to me!  That's why I feature them!
  • Amanda Rheaume - Holding Patterns
  • The Peptides - EP
  • Trevor Alguire - Perish In The Light
  • Andy Shauf - The Party
  • Tanya Tagaq - Retribution
  • Slo' Tom - Down in a Government Town
  • Martha Wainwright - Goodnight City
  • Tim Moxam - Soft Summer
  • Monkey Junk - Time To Roll
  • Kroy - Scavenger
  • Elephant Stone - Ship Of Fools
  • Black Mountain - IV
  • Suuns - Hold Still

Keep tuning in every Friday at 5 pm in Ottawa at 89.1 fm.

Happy 2017 everyone!!

    Showcasing Canada's Emerging Artists

    12/9/2016

This September, Heather Gibson was named the new executive producer of the National Arts Centre’s homegrown singer-songwriter series, NAC Presents.  It’s an artist development program that provides a national stage for emerging artists.  Heather has an impressive background. She was the Executive Director of the Halifax Jazz Festival, and Founder and Artistic Producer of the In the Dead of Winter Music Festival which takes place in both Halifax and here in Wakefield.

I look forward to hearing about her vision for the future of the NAC Presents series.

(On another note, you might like to read a piece I recently wrote about Séan McCann who recently appeared in Ottawa as part of the NAC Presents series. Read it at DamnMag)

Also on today's program, we welome Toronto-based band Future PEERS before their Ottawa release show on Thursday December 15th at Bar Robo. Their debut self-titled album was conceived while being artists in residence at the Banff Centre working with Grammy award winning engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Weezer, Julian Casablancas) and Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew.

Time permitting, we'll also give these a spin for ya:
    • David Dino White (at Avant Garde Bar tonight)
    • David Francey (in Almonte Saturday)

Tune in at 5 pm every Friday on 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

From the hip and from the heart

    PictureHer Harbour
My guests on this week's Hop The Fence are amazingly talented, each in their own right. One shoots straight from the hip and the other sings from the heart. One has 17 albums to his name and the other is up-and-coming.  One is bluesy rock and the other is ethereal electronica "dream folk".

C.R. Avery: On his 18th release, All The Angels Didn't Scare Me, C.R. Avery teams up with Ben Mink to tell the stories of life-like characters, people who have shaped our world - some fictional, some not.  The stories are as diverse as his approach using traditional folk, blues, hip-hop and roots rock.  He'll be at The Blacksheep Inn on Nov. 20.

Her Harbour: AKA Gabrielle Giguère, just released a haunting new single and video for "Hewing Crowns", a track which will make its way on her new album, Go Gently Into the Night, set for release early in 2017. She appears at Le Temporaire in Hull on November 24.

Also queued up for spins this week:
    • Tasseomancy's new album, Do Easy. Appearing Nov 24 at Le Temporaire (with Her Harbour)
    • The Damn Truth will be at House of Targ on Friday night with a new CD Develish Folk
    • Jen Lane appearing with the Sunparlour Players at the Blacksheep Friday night
    • Chanda M: Montreal Psychology-PhD-turned-electro-folk-artist launching her debut EP, Icons of Dreams November 19 at Live on Elgin

It's going to be a solid show! Tune in at 5 pm every Friday on 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

It's November 11, 2016.  Really feeling like we are entering some very strange times.  In honour of Remembrance Day, here are three items we shouldn't ever forget:
    1. The good men and women who put themselves in danger, who lost their lives or limbs, and to those who returned to us.  Thank you for allowing us to live free.
    2. Democracy, before November 8 2016.  Let's hope our freedom remains intact.
    3. Leonard Cohen.  Hallelujah!

Come escape with me at 5 pm for an hour.  We'll listen to some great music and speak to two fascinating artists who create it.
    1. Toronto banjo player and singer-songwriter Hannah Shira Naiman. In town on Saturday at Pressed (750 Gladstone Ave) to showcase her sophomore album Know The Mountain.
    2. The Darcys in town at Babylon on Nov 17 to release their new album, Centerfold.

Tune in at 5 pm every Friday on 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Séan McCann / CHUO Funding Drive

    10/13/2016

I'm honoured to welcome Séan McCann, formerly of Great Big Sea to HTF this week! You won't want to miss Séan speak about his tumultuous but enlightening journey over the past years: Séan left GBS shortly after going sober, then opened up about his survival of childhood abuse. He’s now a solo artist and motivational speaker. He is coming to Ottawa's NAC on October 22nd.

This is the kind of radio programming that I get excited about and am so proud to prepare for you each week. CHUO's Hop The Fence has supported hundreds of independent Canadian and local music artists, many of whom you may not otherwise learn about through traditional media outlets.

The CHUO Funding Drive has started! So far, I'd like to give big thanks to Séan McCann as well as the Blacksheep Inn for their generous donations! Be cool like them and contribute to CHUO's funding drive! Help me reach my goal (or surpass it)! You can donate easily online at CHUO.FM

Cool vibes on the French side of the river

One advantage of being located in the National Capital Region is that we are in the crosshairs of our country's two solitudes: a rich blend of French and English cultures. I am bilingual so I get to enjoy the best of both worlds. (I'm French first actually, if you didn't know.  The only people who ever pick out my French accent are either American or from Toronto. Ha!)

My featured artists this week are performing Friday night at a quaint little club/art house in the heart of Gatineau called Le Temporaire (75 St-Redempteur). Come broaden your horizons with me this Friday at 5 pm.

Lisa Conway, aka L CON is a vocalist, arranger and producer. She has a new album called Moon Milk. It is part "astral folklore and earthly hues", an experimental and psychedelic concoction that was engineered by Andrew Collins at their rural studio in Grey County, ON.  Moon Milk showcases L CON’s background working with filmmakers, dancers, and performance artist.

Montreal’s The Luyas are back in the area with a new EP, Says You, their first new recording since 2012. The band’s debut album released in 2011 was long listed for a Polaris Music Prize that year. Their retro-futurist songs are drenched in echo, and built from guitars, French horn, keyboards, drums and percussion.
The last time The Luyas played at Le Temporaire in 2013, David Byrne of The Talking Heads attended the event after his performance at Ottawa Jazz Festival. That’s pretty cool in my books.

Find us on your radio every Friday at 5 pm at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

    Music news and interviews

I always encourage emerging artists to reach out to me for help promoting their new music or upcoming gigs. I love this part of being involved in the industry.  What a pleasure it is to discover talented artists from around the country!

On today's show, we will be speaking with Thanya Iyer who offers a very unique kind of instrumentation. Her music now strays in between the lines of a variety of eccentric and eclectic styles primarily drawing inspirations from folk and jazz. From Montreal, Thanya will be in Ottawa for a special performance at The Record Center on Monday, 25 July at 6 pm.

Just recently returned from Switzerland, Lyndsay Ferguson is back home and has already wowed local audiences with a masterful gig at Bluesfest.  She has a few upcoming shows lined-up. We thought we'd check in with her to catch up on the latest.
