The past days in the Nation's Capital have been memorable, to put it mildly. And so it seems timely to be welcoming Afghanistan veteran Matt Luloff and his band Hearts&Mines to the studio this afternoon.  Hearts&Mines have been making a name for themselves in Ottawa since their debut in 2011.  Next weekend, they will be joining forces with other local bands for The 10th Annual Remembrance Day Canadian Legion Benefit Show.  The event will be held at The House of Targ (1077 Bank Street) Friday, November 7th and at the Dominion Tavern (33 York Street) on Saturday, November 8th. The line-up includes: The Sons of Scotland Pipe and Drum Band, Hearts&Mines, Four Stroke, The Scally Cap Brats, Slumlord, Lindbergh Babies and introducing Outrigger.

Tune in today at 5 pm on 89.1 FM or on-line at CHUO.fm or on iTunes radio.

And a Happy Halloween to all the goblins out there!

Andrea Simms-KarpĀ

Lots of great live music going on in Ottawa this weekend. Local favorites, Fevers along with Andrea Simms-Karp will be taking the stage at the Shenkman Centre tonight. I haven't chatted with Andrea in quite some time, so I've invited her to join us on-air today to catch up on her plans.  Always delightful, this talented songstress embodies all the qualities (and lovable quirks) of being Canadian!  That includes having devoted her last full-length disc, Hibernation Nation, to our wonderful winters!

I will also be spinning tunes from Thus Owls, Mike Feuerstack, The Wilderness of Manitoba, Rose Cousins and more - all of whom will be in town over the coming days!

BTW,
if you missed our interview with The Wilderness of Manitoba last week, you can listen to it on demand on CHUO's website: Hop The Fence - October 10, 2014

Tune in starting at 5 pm on 89.1 fm in Ottawa or on-line at CHUO.fm.

Wilderness of Manitoba

Out of the wild and into the bright lights: this week we present a band that has fearlessly evolved since its early days.  Formed circa 2008 and now with 4 full-length discs to show for, The Wilderness Of Manitoba are cranking up their sound.  Their brand new disc, Between Colours, showcases their unique boy/girl vocals, guitar/violin string work and features some impressive contributions from the likes of Howie Beck and Alex Lifeson. Yes, THAT Alex Lifeson, lead guitarist of Canada's seminal rock band, RUSH.  How does a guitar solo from a member of RUSH fit in?  Not only does it fit, but it helps carve the band's unique folk-rock sound. With Michael Phillip Wojewoda (Rheostatics) joining in with his haunting theremin, the rock sound goes prog in a shoegazer kinda way.  (Ahh the joys of describing music with mere words.)  All to say, it's a great combination of creative energy that deserves to be heard.

We will be chatting with them on air this week.  They are coming to Ottawa next Saturday, October 18 at Mavericks. Tune in for a preview on 89.1 FM or on-line at CHUO.fm  All the fun starts at 5 pm!

Gold and Marrow ... no more thorns

After years of love and songs, Ms Shannon has shed her thorns.  Shannon Rose and her mellifluous thorns have now transformed into Gold and Marrow. In her own words: "Both my writing and band members have been changing, and it felt like the right time for the name to change too. The marrow represents the essentialness of music for me, and the gold represents how we polish the songs through the process of rehearsing and recording."

The new disc,
Forever, features contributions from Michael Dubue (Hilotrons) and Matt Goud (Northcote). Recorded, engineered and mastered at Bova Lab studio (Feist, Bahamas, Zeus). Produced by the ever present, Steve Matylewicz.

Hear them tell the story live in-studio at 5 pm, then see them live on-stage at the Blacksheep Inn on Saturday night!

Tune in at 5 pm on 89.1 fm in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm
