Time to escape the Winter Doldrums

I know, I know! It's almost spring. Forget May, March is truly the cruelest month.  We're all anticipating warmer climes, but March teases us with crumbs of warmth sprinkled through subzero temps and endless streams of white stuff descending from angry clouds. But fear not, the Doldrums Music Festival is coming to sweep us away from it all.  In its 4th year, the Doldrums Music Festival takes place next weekend, March 27-28 with 8 great local bands. Four are lined-up for Friday night at Pressed Cafe and another four at Club Saw on Saturday.

It sounds like the perfect remedy. Join me this Friday as co-organizer, Peter Zachar (of Those Gulls) tells us all about it.

BTW, I recently did a little moonlighting for Damn Mag, the music magazine that gives a damn!  I think you'll enjoy this quick read about eclectic Canadian klezmer-jazz band, Gypsophilia.  They're releasing a new disc soon and will be touring extensively through the spring and summer.  Check it out and expect to hear them featured on Hop The Fence in the coming months.

Tune in every Friday at 5 pm on CHUO, number 89.1 on your FM dial in Ottawa.
You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Milo's been gone too long

3/12/2015

2014 was a busy year for Milo McMahon. In March, he released his debut album, ‘Big City Hustle’. By October, he had released a follow-up 3-song EP ‘Gone Too Long’ produced by Dave Newfeld (Broken Social Scene, Super Furry Animals) and featuring performances by Joseph Yarmush of Suuns along with Lisa Iwanycki Moore of Blood & Glass.

Milo was born in Ireland, but make no mistake, he is vintage Cannuck. His signature happy, feel good, crunchy guitar rock is likely a result of Milo's explorations in the great Canadian wilderness. He spent two years living in a tent planting over one million trees in the wilds of Northern Canada before settling as a musician in Toronto and later Montreal.  We'll be chatting with Milo this week before his arrival in the National Capital Region. He's appearing at Kaffe 1870 in Wakefield on Saturday, and at The Rainbow in Ottawa on Sunday.

Tune in at 89.1 fm in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm every Friday at 5 pm.  You can also

According to Newfoundland's Fortunate Ones, the secret to happiness and bliss is recognizing our fortune and being grateful for it.  The band consisting of Andrew O'Brien and Catherine Allan have released their debut album, The Bliss and are ready to show it off at the Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield this Friday!

The Bliss is a culmination of beautiful pop melodies, with folk harmonies and infectious choruses that will have everyone singing along. It also features guest appearances by East Coast favourites Jenn Grant, Don Brownrigg and Kinley Dowling.

I look forward to chatting with the duo on air at 5 pm Friday on CHUO.fm. Join us!
Find us on 89.1 FM in Ottawa or on-line at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.
