Dear independent music and radio fans! I'd like to personally thank you for contributing to CHUO's funding drive over the past weeks. I appreciate your pledges and donations and thank you from the bottom of my heart. Hugs all around xox ! I'll take that as a nod to continue in my quest to bring you the greatest Canadian music you may have never heard before but won't soon forget.

ON THE SHOW TODAY:

Gianna Lauren: Local smouldering songstress is back with a brand new disc, On Personhood. Recorded at the House of Miracles Studio with Andy Magoffin (Two-Minute Miracles, Constantines, Feist, Jenny Omnichord), you will find comfort in its ethereal atmospheric rock soundscapes.

Sarah Cripps: Country/Blues through the eyes (and vocal chords) of this young Torontonian is sure to both mesmerize and surprise you. She joins us in studio today with her debut album, Change and then takes the stage tonight at Zaphod's.

Catch you on the airwaves from 5 to 6 pm at CHUO 89.1 FM in Ottawa or on-line at CHUO.fm where you can listen on demand at your convenience.

BTW, if you feel left out because you missed out on contributing to our funding drive and are coveting our Friends of CHUO card, it's still not too late to email a pledge to me. Thanks for the luv !

Fred Eaglesmith - The Power of Radio

Did you know that the advent of the transistor radio back in the '50s is responsible for the popularization of Rock and Roll itself? Suddenly, portable radios were available to teenagers in North America, Europe and other parts of the world, who by then had enough disposable income to afford the devices. Things have evolved dramatically since then and today we have so many options for listening to the wide array of musical genres that beg for our attention. This is where college/community radio plays an important niche role.  These grass-roots, volunteer-based stations, expose listening audiences to the DIY scene and targeted content.

Clearly, you already appreciate the value of CHUO if you are reading this. But CHUO cannot provide quality content without some form of financial funding.  So yep - this is the time of year when I come knocking on your virtual door or ear drums and ask you to drop a few coins in our hats.  Hop The Fence will be celebrating 10 years on air in a few months.  10 years! That's 520 Fridays of programming! Just for you - For your listening pleasure!  Please help keep independent music and radio alive and well by making a pledge!

Speaking of transistor radios, this week's special guest has a deep appreciation for what the magical device has bestowed upon our modern world.  With his latest disc entitled 6 Volts (the size of battery required to power portable radios of days gone by), Fred Eaglesmith blends country, blues, folk and rock and roll. Tune in at 5 pm to hear all about this exceptional Canadian storytelling troubadour. He will be appearing at the Blacksheep Inn on Saturday.

Jill Zmud

Today we are featuring a Saskatchewan-born, Ottawa-based artist who won much critical acclaim in 2009 with her debut album, As We Quietly Drive By. Working with local luminaries such as Jim Bryson and Dave Draves, Jill Zmud won our hearts with her finely-crafted songs and delicately disarming charm. Seems like time has flown by since then, which is why I was very pleased to discover that she is taking the stage again this weekend, performing with Amelia Curran in Morrisburg.

What has Jill been up to since she last appeared on Hop The Fence a few years ago?  Find out this evening. I invite you to eavesdrop on our conversation. Tune in at 5 pm on 89.1 fm in Ottawa or on-line at www.CHUO.fm.

We’ll be listening to lots of great Canadian music this afternoon. Lend us your ears and we’ll help kick off your weekend on a happy note!
