Mother Mother take to the woods!

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the speed of life, technology, work, cars, the ozone layer?! I've heard myself say (more than once) "I just need to take to the woods! Go hide and hibernate for a short while to recharge the batteries." Well apparently, I'm not alone, as this week's guests have also considered this option but instead chose to create a great new disc about it.

MOTHER MOTHER:  Listening to their new disc, The Sticks, it is hard to believe that they started out as an acoustic folk trio. Today, four albums later, they've evolved into a 5-piece, fully plugged-in dark art, pop rock band. They express both joy and frustration at the modern world at times with anger and grit but more often with mellifluous wit.

We'll be chatting with them as they prepare for their gig at the Bronson Center in Ottawa tonight.  As usual, we'll be spinning tunes from other bands coming through the area this weekend. Tune in at 5 pm on 89.1 FM or on-line at www.CHUO.fm

This Friday on Hop The Fence from 5 to 6 pm:

Poor Young Things:
Every once in a while, I get a craving for some straight up rock. Nothing my brain needs to decipher, no active listening skills required, just the willingness to enjoy loud tunes and have fun! That’s what Poor Young Things have for us.  They are currently recording with their dream producer Jon Drew (Arkells) and signed a deal with Bumstead Records. Won’t be long before they’re a household name. Catch them at Algonquin College on Monday night.

The Maladies of Adam Stokes:
Six friends wanting to share good times with like-minded music fans.  In the past three years, these Toronto-based musicians have blended melancholy with joy, borrowing from a variety of genres to create a uniquely gritty folk/rock sound.

Their latest disc, City of Trees, showcases multiple instruments including electric and slide guitars, glockenspiel, trumpet, melodian, keyboard and fiddle. (They had me at glockenspiel !) They are in Ottawa this Friday at Avant-Garde Bar.

Tune in to 89.1 on your FM dial in Ottawa or go on-line at www.CHUO.FM.

Presenting a Trifecta on Hop The Fence

I’m doing a triple-header tonight. It will be a busy show, but there is just so much going on in and around town this week, there’s lots of territory to cover.

The Darcys are an art rock band from Toronto. Their self-titled debut was produced by Murray Lightburn of The Dears and released in October 2011. In January 2012, they released, AJA, an interpretation of Steely Dan's 1977 studio masterpiece. They are bringing that show live at Zaphod’s tonight.

Evening Hymns are on tour in support of their second full-length album, Spectral Dusk. It's a beautiful, heartbreaking album, singer Jonas Bonnetta wrote after losing his dad in 2009. It was recorded in a log cabin outside of Ottawa with friends from The Wooden Sky, Timber Timbre and City & Colour playing on the record. Catch the band live at Maverick’s, Thursday Nov 15.

Little Birdie, aka Orit Shimoni, will be in Wakefield tonight at Kafe 1870, in support of her new disc, Bare Bones. It is a collection of 11 songs recorded completely acoustically. It is much more personal than her previous work.

We should have time to spin tunes from the many other bands that are coming to town. Tune in from 5 to 6 pm on 89.1 FM in Ottawa, or online at CHUO.FM
