Jerry Leger - Early Riser

Toronto songwriter Jerry Leger is bringing his seventh studio album, Early Riser to Ottawa this weekend. In past albums, he has enjoyed the presence of some of Canada's elite, Serena Ryder and Ron Sexsmith.  On Early Riser he is joined by his excellent band, The Situation and welcomes Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies on production duty.

Tune in Friday at 5 p.m. to hear Jerry and his contagious, poignant and somewhat laid-back pop/folk/country tunes.
If all goes well, he'll be showing up in person ahead of his gig tonight at Zaphod's.

Catch us on 89.1 fm in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm.

10 Years ago today...

Over 10 years ago, I started my journey as a college radio host and producer at CHUO.  It has been an enriching experience. I have learned so much over the decade and met hundreds of amazing people, musicians, artists and fellow community radio volunteers.  I have loved every moment!

I recall in the very early days of the program, my occasional co-host, Alanna, "discovered" a great Toronto-based band called the Local Rabbits, from whence came my guest on this week's Hop The Fence: Peter Elkas

Peter
is also celebrating a 10th anniversary! His acclaimed solo debut, Party Of One, which featured session musicians, Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith) and Doug Friesen (Dave Bidini Band, John K Samson) was released in 2004. A limited vinyl pressing of the LP and a tour will mark the occasion. Peter will be in Ottawa on Saturday night at Mavericks.  I'm looking forward to speaking with him to reminisce on a decade gone by in what feels like the bat of eye.

Tune in at 5 p.m this Friday (and every Friday) at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm

I had a blast co-hosting, today's "Friends with Benefits" radio show on CKCU with the inimitable Chris White. Ottawa is fortunate to have 2 great community/college stations. While I have been on air at CHUO for a decade, it was cool to hang at our sister station this afternoon.

We invited the ever suave Claude Marquis and the delicious DeeDee Butters of The PepTides to come chat with us on air. Much hilarity and mayhem ensued! They've just released a new double disc, Love, Question Mark. You must catch them live to get the full 3D experience!

Many thanks to Chris for inviting me in.  And thanks to the program's regular host, Tonya, for allowing us to take over the airwaves this afternoon. If you missed it, you can still hear it here.

Is it Friday yet??  I'm getting ready for this week's Hop The Fence. Planning plenty of great Canadian tunes for your listening pleasure, including an interview with New Brunswick's finest...

Olympic Symphonium:  We are most happy to welcome them back to our studio on the release of their fourth studio album, Chance To Fate. It was recorded in a haunted hotel over four days, which no doubt added to the atmospheric tensions on what is sure to be another memorable addition to the great Canadian independent music canon. And if that wasn't enough, the full album includes an exclusive remix EP featuring Michael Feuerstack (Snailhouse), Tim Crabtree (Paper Beat Scissors) and Joshua Van Tassel (Great Lake Swimmers). They take the stage at Pressed next Friday, April 18.

Tune in at 5 pm on 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at www.chuo.fm.

Here we go! Lots going on in town this weekend.  Must be springtime in O-Town!  Here's who's on today's program:

LIFE SIZE MEN
:
Collectively, this band holds oodles of musical history and rock greatness.  Depending on where you've been for the past couple of decades, these names may sound familiar to you: Evil Farm Children, Screaming Bamboo, Gonks Go Beat...  Either way, if you wanna rawk, Life Size Men are your dudes and they will 'bring it' at Irene's on Saturday night. Bring ear plugs and dancing shoes.

SOUND OF LIONS:
Ottawa trip-hop funksters have a much anticipated, brand new disc called, Take Me With You. They are dropping this baby at Zaphod's on Saturday. You will love it! Find out why. Meet the band on HTF this Friday!

All the fun starts at 5 pm Friday. Tune in at 89.1 fm or on-line at www.CHUO.fm
