Good things come in threes

A sure sign of springtime in the Nation's capital with myriad live music shows all over town this weekend.  We have three interviews lined-up for this week's Hop The Fence.

Delta Will: They have a beautiful new disc, Weathering to release here in Ottawa. The show is on Thursday, May 26 at Pressed (with Claude Munson).
Erin Saoirse Adair: She's dropping her brand new EP Gaslight at Pressed on May 21. But first she's dropping it off at CHUO studio for us to have a spin and a chat.
Danielle Allard: Local singer-songwriter is gearing up for a tour of the Canadian East Coast. She's starting off with a tour fundraising event at Live on Elgin this Friday, May 20.

Also in town this weekend, Jen Lane at The Blacksheep Inn on Thursday, May 26.  We'll be spinning a tune from her new disc, This Life of Mine, her 5th studio album.

It’s all happening on your radio airwaves every Friday at 5 pm! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Lucky Friday the 13th!

Let's see what kind of trouble we can get into this Friday, the 13th.  Here's what we have queued up for you on this very lucky date!

Tanika Charles: With the release of her long-anticipated debut LP, Soul Run, she is taking the album on the road with a cross-country tour making a stop in Ottawa at Ritual this Saturday. If Tanika’s singing it, she’s lived it as displayed on Soul Run’s first single and title track, a tale of withered romance and high octane escape.

Steve Dawson: This multi-talented musician, writer, producer needs no introduction!  He spends much of his time helping other artists bring their creative visions to life. But now it's time for him to showcase his own brand new material. ‘Solid States and Loose Ends’ is a sublime set of new songs that play to all of Dawson’s many musical strengths.  He'll be at Irene's next Wednesday (May 18) with Michael Jerome Brown.

If you like live music and you're in Ottawa this weekend, you will have many choices to pick from.  We will try to fit as many spins from these fine artists on the program:
- Kalle Mattson and Jason Collett at the Blacksheep Inn on Friday night / SOLD OUT!
- Lynne Hanson and the Good Intentions at the Blacksheep on Saturday
- Moonfruits opening for Old Man Grant at LIVE on Elgin on Sunday

It’s all happening on your radio airwaves every Friday at 5 pm! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Amanda Rheaume and Christa Couture

“Aboriginal Juno nominee and Juno Humanitarian Award winner!”  These words were used in a recent press release I received to describe Ottawa’s own Amanda Rheaume. Wow – how she has come a long way! You could call it a real overnight sensation (...about 15 years in the making.) We are very proud of our girl. She has a new single (and video) called Red Dress, which features noted Canadian artist, Chantal Kreviazuk.

Amanda will be at the NAC Fourth Stage on Thursday, May 5 to present her new album, Holding Patterns.
Tune in today to catch our special broadcast with her, live in our CHUO studio.

Christa Couture knows a thing or two about grief. Yet, she always manages to use music to uplift the souls of those who listen. On her latest album, Long Time Leaving, produced by Steve Dawson, Christa offers a truly unique take on the topic thanks in part to a long and complex relationship with grief that’s given her rare insight into its nuances. We’ll be chatting with her tonight and she will be in Ottawa on May 1 st at Live on Elgin.

It’s all happening on your radio airwaves at 5 pm today! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Micah Barnes, singer and raconteur

You will  hear some stories this evening on Hop The Fence.  New York Stories along with many others.  Micah Barnes cut his teeth in the cabarets and jazz clubs of Toronto while still a teenager and became a well-loved singer songwriter on the Queen Street scene. That was before joining legendary Canadian A Capella band, The Nylons and touring the world.

He is in Ottawa this weekend at Gigspace with a new solo album called New York Stories.  You'll be mesmerized by his stories and his deep and delicious voice as he pays homage to the rich musical history of the Big Apple with songs that describe a long distance romance using the rhythms of the Cotton Club, the Brill Building, The Apollo Theatre and classic Broadway.

We are also trying to coordinate a phoner with Montreal's SUUNS who will be in Ottawa on April 21 at St-Alban's as part of Arboretum festival (
w/ special guests: Scattered Clouds + Pith & the Parenchymas). SUUNS will be showcasing their long-awaited third album, Hold/Still.

Tune in at 5 pm today! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

This Friday on Hop The Fence, we'll be turning up the sod as one does in early spring (snow or no snow!)

Sultans of String:
Featuring Ottawa's own Chris McKhool, the band is
serving up messages of hope and cultural harmony alongside a smorgasbord of ragas, reels ‘n’ rumbas. They have a new album, Subcontinental Drift, with special guest Anwar Khurshid (Oscar-winning Life of Pi, Love Guru-Mike Myers).  They will perform at the NAC-4th Stage on April 14th (7:30pm, $35).

Ottawa Grassroots Festival:
The Ottawa Grassroots Festival is a family-friendly gathering of folk music, dance and spoken word. The festival fosters inclusivity, encourages participation, respects volunteers, supports artists and develops community partnerships. It’s called Grassroots because it is! This not-for-profit organization is run entirely by volunteers.

Now in its 5th year, the Ottawa Grassroots Festival will take place from April 21-24 at The Southminster United Church, 15 Aylmer Avenue, Ottawa.  Bob Nesbitt, Producer of the Festival will join us in studio to tell us all about it!

Tune in at 5 pm today! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Going solo with Steve Hill

3/10/2016

There are just some things that need to be seen as well as heard. Steve Hill's one-man-band act is one of these.  Hill performs standing up while singing and playing guitar, his feet playing bass drum, snare drum, hi-hats and with a drum stick fused to the head of his trusty guitar, any other percussion within reach!

His solo act may have started out for economical reasons with his Volume One album four years ago, but through time, he has developed an impressive expertise handling multiple instruments at once.  He is in Ottawa this weekend (at the Shenkman Center in Orleans) to perform songs from his latest, Solo Recordings Volume Three.  Expect guitar-based bluesy rock'n'roll.  I look forward to chatting with him on air at 5 pm today.

Also on tonight's program, Jenna Glatt. Raised in Ottawa, Jenna began singing when she was very young, winning her first competition at age 8 which was followed by her first professional gig a few months later on Parliament Hill as part of the Canada Day Celebrations. Jenna knew from that moment on that this is what she was born to do.  Since then, she has appeared at many international music festivals and venues and has been collaborating with top level producers and songwriters in New York City, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta, Toronto, and Copenhagen.

Jenna's third album (R&B/Pop) of all original music is currently getting world-wide airplay in Canada, the US, and across Europe. She will be at The Blacksheep Inn on Sunday at 4 pm.

Tune in at 5 pm today! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Marching with the blues

3/3/2016

PictureAlan Marsden and TJ Wheeler
Since 1990, TJ Wheeler has been bringing blues to the schools in the US and across the globe. Inspired by his Hope, Heroes and the Blues program, the Ottawa RBC Bluesfest has been engaging budding musicians through a not-for-profit residency program in local schools for 18 years.  That's how our beloved festival gives back to the community.

This year, more than 20 professional artists/educators are visiting 24 area schools during a 10-day program that will run through to March 11. TJ Wheeler will be part of the artist delegation along with an a-list of local artists.  TJ will be in the CHUO studio this week to regale us with his lore along with Alan Marsden, the Ottawa Blues In Schools program coordinator and artist.

There is a lot going on in town over the next few days. It's one of the busiest weekends of the year so far. Must be due to the longer days. (Have you noticed? I have!)  I will do my best to spin most of the following:
  • Winchester Warm with Eamon McGrath and Lake Forest (Pressed Cafe, March 4)
  • The Jivewires with Blast From The Sun (at Live on Elgin, March 4)
  • David Francey (at NAC, March 4)
  • Radio Radio with Alex Silas and the Subterraneans (at Ritual March 4)
  • Amos The Transparent with Lost Cousin (at The Blacksheep, March 5)
  • Charlotte Cornfield (at Pressed, March 5)
  • Moonfruits (at The Branch, March 10)

Tune in at 5 pm today! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Unphased by the cold, festivals abound

2/5/2016

We are a hearty bunch, us Ottawans, us Canadians. We can't hide from winter's icy cold, snow, sleet or slush so we get outdoors and become one with nature. The city has been abuzz with live music and all sorts of music industry types patronizing various venues over the past few days. The Megaphono festival has been a resounding success so far and events wind down today.

Beginning this weekend is the aptly named, "In The Dead Of Winter" (IDOW) music festival. It's an acoustic based festival that is held annually in Halifax on the last weekend of January and then in Wakefield, Quebec on the second weekend in February.  The Halifax festival began in 2006 while the Wakefield festival began in 2009, at the Black Sheep Inn.

On Hop The Fence tonight, I will be speaking with Terra LIghtfoot, who has had a stellar year since releasing her new album Every Time My Mind Runs Wild in April. She is in Ottawa this weekend performing at the ultimate Canadian winter festival, Winterlude. Then, tomorrow night she'll be at The Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield as part of IDOW.  She'll be back to open up for Blue Rodeo at CTC on Feb 14!

Tune in at 5 pm today! Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.

Megaphono and Young Rivals

1/29/2016

According to lead singer and guitarist, Aron D'Alesio, Young Rival's new album sounds "like Sinatra dropping acid with Deerhunter". Consider yourselves warned! We've been waiting over 3 years for the Hamilton trio's new disc, Interior Light and it has been worth the wait. Ten years together and 3 albums later, they are in Ottawa tonight at House of Targ. We'll be chatting with the band today on Hop The Fence.

More music news: the city will abound in musicology all next week as the Megaphono festival takes over stages in a variety of venues across the city. From Feb 2 to 5, you can learn from expert panel discussions and soak in some great concerts.  Jon Bartlett, head of Kelp records and grand poobah of the festival will be joining us today to give us the scoop!

Find us at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.
