Deep. Dark. Southern. Voodoo.
Impossible to believe these sounds exude from a young woman from Scarborough, Ontario (according to the liner notes). I was hooked from the start. Slightly frightening but beautifully poetic. Fast forward 2 years, Ladan Hussein, aka Al Spx, a Somali-Canadian releases her brilliant sophomore album, Neuroplasticity. Between the two releases, she worked with Moby and was short-listed for a Polaris Music Prize. Last summer, she appeared at Jazzfest in Ottawa to a disappointingly sparse crowd. I was there. Enthralled.
Mz Spx will be joining us on air before appearing at Ritual Friday night as part of the Ontario Scene event. Expecting a sold out crowd for this one! Join us on 89.1 FM starting at 5 pm in Ottawa. You can also find us on iTunes radio under College stations and on #943 on Rogers HD.
Stoked!
