10 years a volunteer - 10 years of opportunities

Last night, Thursday, June 5, I had the honour of receiving an Award for my 10 years of service at CHUO 89.1 fm.  It seems ironic to me as I would be the first to thank CHUO for giving me 10 years of joy, fulfillment and opportunity! It was a lovely event and I was not the only CHUO volunteer to pick up an award.

The
Deputy Minister of the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, Chisanga Puta-Chekwe, gave us a warm hand shake and both congratulated and thanked us individually.

Thanks to CHUO for putting our names forth to be recognized. Thanks to our community and listeners for tuning in and sharing our on-air adventures.

Guests from in-town and outer space

Join us between 5 and 6 pm Friday to hear from 2 special guests:

WINCHESTER WARM
Ottawa's own are dropping a brand new disc Friday at the city's latest popular intimate concert venue, St. Alban's church.  The new record called Belle Attente was recorded around Ottawa with Jarrett Bartlett at the helm.  Expect a blend of pop indie delicacies mixed with angst and hope.

DELTA WILL
Visiting from outer-space, Delta Will are in at Pressed on Saturday joining More Please! for their CD release.  Delta Will's EP, It All Glows is abuzz with synth, samples, drum machines. The whole thing takes on ethereal tones with dark lyrics expressed mellifluously and harmonically.

We'll also be spinning tracks from other bands in town this weekend including FEVERS, Steve Berndt and Shari Ulrich.  Tune in to 89.1 FM in Ottawa or on-line at CHUO.FM

Jen Lane and Marta Pacek

2 live studio performances on tap for you on this evening's Hop The Fence.

We are happy to welcome Marta Pacek back to the CHUO studio this evening.  Originating from Australia where she is highly regarded as an alt-folk-country artist, she has made her home here in Canada.  Canadians are taking notice,  turning heads and ears in her direction.  Marta’s third full-length album, Voodoo Dolls & False Alarms was released in March. She appears tonight in Wakefield at Kaffe 1870 and tomorrow night in Ottawa at the Rainbow.

Jen Lane's career started at the tender age of 16 buoyed by a Prairie Music Award nomination.  Later, a freak backstage accident left her with a badly broken foot that would take years to repair, bringing her budding career to a halt.  But she is back on both feet now and ready to start anew. The songstress and writer will be in Ottawa tonight at Raw Sugar.

Tune in at 5 pm on 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm.

We look forward to chatting with Ottawa space-folkies, Orienteers who return to the stage at Irene's Pub on Saturday with special guest, Tilda. The two bands share two band members, yet each has its own signature sound. You'll hear everything from pedal steel guitar loops and bowed guitar, to e-Bows and trumpets.  We'll be giving away tickets to the show and limited edition CDs!

Also on the program tonight, we've got The Archers, who have just released their debut full-length album, These Wicked Woods. The young Victoria, BC based band have been making their mark in indie rock-folk-pop worlds since 2011 and their new album emerges triumphant with their blend of folky harmonies, modern rock, and indie-pop trends. The band will be at The Blacksheep Inn on Saturday night.

Tune in at 5 p.m. on 89.1 fm in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm.  Get ready to Tweet or call to win tickets and CDs tonight between 5 and 6 pm.  Keep this # handy: 613-562-5967.

Jerry Leger - Early Riser

Toronto songwriter Jerry Leger is bringing his seventh studio album, Early Riser to Ottawa this weekend. In past albums, he has enjoyed the presence of some of Canada's elite, Serena Ryder and Ron Sexsmith.  On Early Riser he is joined by his excellent band, The Situation and welcomes Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies on production duty.

Tune in Friday at 5 p.m. to hear Jerry and his contagious, poignant and somewhat laid-back pop/folk/country tunes.
If all goes well, he'll be showing up in person ahead of his gig tonight at Zaphod's.

Catch us on 89.1 fm in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm.

10 Years ago today...

Over 10 years ago, I started my journey as a college radio host and producer at CHUO.  It has been an enriching experience. I have learned so much over the decade and met hundreds of amazing people, musicians, artists and fellow community radio volunteers.  I have loved every moment!

I recall in the very early days of the program, my occasional co-host, Alanna, "discovered" a great Toronto-based band called the Local Rabbits, from whence came my guest on this week's Hop The Fence: Peter Elkas

Peter
is also celebrating a 10th anniversary! His acclaimed solo debut, Party Of One, which featured session musicians, Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith) and Doug Friesen (Dave Bidini Band, John K Samson) was released in 2004. A limited vinyl pressing of the LP and a tour will mark the occasion. Peter will be in Ottawa on Saturday night at Mavericks.  I'm looking forward to speaking with him to reminisce on a decade gone by in what feels like the bat of eye.

Tune in at 5 p.m this Friday (and every Friday) at 89.1 FM in Ottawa or online at CHUO.fm
